SaveWave – Sealife Saving Technology

SaveWave – Sealife Saving Technology

from The Netherlands

The beginning

Since the start of this millennium, SaveWave has developed some great products and we are proud to have won different awards. From our Dolphin Savers and Orca Savers to the Seabird Savers, our product’s reception in the industry has always been ground-breaking.

The adventure began with the strong will of Floris Koumans – owner of the Orange Pearl Innovation Group, when he wanted to help fisherman in Greece who conflicted with dolphins. Dolphins were destroying their nets and ate their fish. This resulted in the Dolphin Saver.

SaveWave is constantly working with experts all over the world with the intention to create innovative solutions to protect marine animals and support fisherman in their daily struggle with marine life. SaveWave is specialized in the development of ecologically sustainable solutions. The company develops unique solutions by using ultrasonic sound signals, which create safe zones around problem areas. Our innovations are used to protect human activity from marine mammals without harming them.

One of our greatest challenges is working with these unbelievable intelligent marine mammals such as Orcas, Dolphins, Whales. Our unique technology and our know-how have enabled us to do this and retain customers all over the world from Alaska to Norway, from Asia to South America.

Our future

Because of our research on marine life for more than two decades and the growing interaction between humans and these great animals, new markets open every time. At this moment we have started research on salmon farms, which are conflicting with Seals and Seabirds which are conflicting with different kinds of fishery. As always we are looking for sustainable solutions beneficial for both worlds. Our mission is untouched since day one, which is to end negative interactions between marine life and human activity. Our goal is to continue with this mission and to create, innovate and develop for many years to come.

FlowFood sets the new standard in the food industry

FlowFood sets the new standard in the food industry.

EASY. HEALTHY. TASTY.

FlowFood sets the new standard in the food industry.

FlowFood just opened its doors in the energetic and vibrant neighborhood Amsterdam-Zuid, the Netherlands. The FlowFood place has enough room to eat and relax, but is also conveniently situated for take-away. The products, ingredients and philosophy of FlowFood is that you feel good about what you eat and also what you leave behind. We provide delicious food, consisting of pure ingredients with a high nutritional value, from fair partners, together with a great attention to a minimal ‘foodprint’. Sustainable ingredients, minimal waste in the supply chain and no plastic packaging. We care about you and our environment!

PURE FOOD

In terms of food, people have lost their way. Food in general has been processed to such an extent to bring the cost down that the nutritional value and the flavor are lost (or artificially created). In addition, the earth is becoming exhausted and the damage caused by the wrong food and pollution from packaging is enormous. On the other hand, good food is easy if you go back to the natural way of growing, catching and breeding (slow food) and let your own body guide you in what you need.

OUR DREAM WORLD.

We see a world where…healthy, tasty and easy food does not have to be more expensive than fast food and that we can be an example of responsible entrepreneurship. Our dream is to…to build a national chain of FLOWFOOD Places with which we make fair, pure and healthy food available to everyone. We contribute to a better world by putting Flow Food on the map and by setting an immediately visible example of sustainable business operations in everything.

FlowFood is food that makes you feel good!

Rhino update – Checking in on rhino Orange Pearl

Rhino Update

Checking in on rhino Orange Pearl and the other two adopted white rhinos.

How is our adopted rhino doing?

In the picture above, you can see our adopted rhino Orange Pearl (left) next to InSocial (right). They have been part of the Mapesu Private Game Reserve for 16 months now and they are doing exceptionally well. Regularly we receive a short update about the white rhinos and we love to share these with you!

Check out this beautiful footage of the adopted rhinos in the video below:

Baby news!

In the last update we got some great news. White rhino InSocial is currently pregnant! Also, our adoption rhino has been spotted by the anti-poaching unit with rhino Forum9, so now we need to hold thumbs that she is pregnant as well. The average gestation period of a white rhino is 16 to 18 months for one young, so this can take some time. Every 2 to 5 years a female can have a young. At birth the baby rhino doesn’t have a horn yet and is already weighing tens of kilos.

A baby rhino is also called a calf. A calf stays with its mother until it is fully grown and a new young is born. He always stays close behind his mother, who protects him against attacks from other animals. The calf is suckled for a whole year. After 4 years a calf is sexually mature. However, the males have to wait 10 years with mating. After that time, they will be strong enough to do this properly.

White or gray?

As you can see on the pictures, the rhinos are gray. Something you wouldn’t think with the name ‘White rhino’. The White rhino is also called Wide Lip Rhinoceros, because they distinguish themselves from other African rhinos with their wide mouths. It owes its name to a translation mistake by the English. Because of his wide lips the African farmers called him ‘Wide lip’. The English misunderstood this and thought it was ‘White lip’. Since then, we have continued to call this rhino the ‘White rhino’, even though he is ordinary grey.

Rhinos Orange Pearl, InSocial and Forum9 seem to have established their territory on the reserve and have settled well. Mapesu Private Game Reserve has informed us that they are very tolerant towards vehicles and delight their guests with great viewing opportunities.

About the organization ‘Mapesu’

The Mapesu Private Game Reserve is situated in northern Limpopo, South Africa and is spread across 7,200 hectares in size. Currently, the reserve protects over 46 various bird, mammal and tree species, including elephants, cheetahs, giraffes, buffalo and rhinos. These are all animals which continue to form the flora and fauna of the reserve.

At Mapesu, they pursue the conservation efforts and protection of various animals, including those endangered. Mapesu started out in 2014 and at this moment that already have four of the Big Five in their reserve. The Big Five consists of the lion, leopard, rhinoceros, elephant, and Cape buffalo.

Their goal is to preserve and restore the environment and re-establish biological diversity while creating an up-close and personal experience that reaches into the heart and soul of every visitor.

As well as, to help fund the anti-poaching unit throughout the year.
  4. Come, visit or support the places that do good deeds; thus by doing so, your participation will help to fund the efforts happening in the background.

Floris Koumans – Live like a dolphin

Live like a dolphin:
intelligent and happy

Interview with Floris Koumans by Hilda Bouma

“I want to live like a dolphin does: intelligent and happy.”

The dolphin is the animal with which serial entrepreneur Floris Koumans identifies. Artist Tim Boin made one especially for him. And another one. And that led to further collaboration.

After high school, Floris Koumans (53) had two options, either employed or studied. But because he didn’t want one and couldn’t do the other, he left for Paros, in the Aegean Sea. I became a poverty-stricken fisherman on a Greek island. Lying in a bay near a campfire – it was March – he thought he had been happiest as a child when he could build huts and think of new things. Suddenly he knew: He had to become an entrepreneur. Setting up innovative businesses, and when they were up and running, starting the next one. That’s how he could make his dreams come true.

Koumans returned to the Netherlands and set up his first company to develop an alternative to antibiotics. I come from a medical family; on both the father’s and the mother’s side there are generations of doctors. I wanted to make the world a better place’, explains Koumans in his farm in the Green Heart. ‘Everybody declared me crazy. Now millions of products are sold all over the world every year.’
While his empire with the name Orange Pearl grew steadily to a total of 18 companies operating all over the world, he regularly returned to Paros with his Greek wife and their five children. Also to go out to sea again with his fishing friends. Then I heard “whoem” and saw from a distance how they threw sticks of dynamite between a group of dolphins. As a fisherman, I myself had also been troubled by dolphins tearing your nets to pieces. They cause great damage.’This experience led to yet another company in his group, SaveWave, which among other things produces transmitters to use sound to keep the dolphins away from the nets.

The dolphin is Koumans’ spirit animal, he says, the animal with which he identifies. He also has one tattooed on his arm. ‘Got it from my wife at the birth of my eldest son. I want to live like a dolphin: free, intelligent, social, happy, playful.’ That his favorite work of art is a dolphin will not surprise you. He has two, both by artist Tim Boin. He remembers them from the days when they lived in the centre of Delft. ‘Tim was a very talented guy from the neighborhood.’

Geometry of life

When they met again a few years ago, Koumans was impressed by his art. ‘Tim works on the basis of hidden geometry. That is the geometry of life, the mathematical proportions that determine everything in nature. It is also called sacred geometry. Think of a severed nautilus shell, which is mathematically perfect. But you also see it in crystals.’

With one dolphin, made of wood, Boin slowly transforms the natural shape of the marine mammal into geometric planes. The other dolphin is entirely made of flat glass in stainless steel. It’s hand polished. Every piece of glass in it consists of layers with a nanocoating through which they reflect. Tim plays with the light.’ His meeting with Tim Boin was one of the reasons to rearrange his life, says Koumans. ‘I was always on the road. When the wind blew, I wanted to surf, but I didn’t have time for it. But hey, I was free, right? Apparently I wasn’t.’

Koumans divested most of his businesses, leaving eight smaller ones, mainly in the health sector. Now he only wants to do things he wants to jump out of bed for in the morning. He wants to build the proverbial huts. A ‘business hippie’ his family members call him. Two days a week he can still be found in the office, the rest of the time he fills up effortlessly. He pours his homemade elderflower lemonade. ‘You have to pick the flowers just after the sun has risen,’ he says. He also distils his own eau de vie, from the fruit that the birds have left hanging in his top fruit trees. And he gives master classes. ‘Everywhere in business it’s all about growth. I think and live from nature, and there growth only makes sense when it flourishes. Nobody finds the green stem interesting, only when it becomes a daffodil or a tulip does it acquire identity’. With his Grow and Flourish Foundation he helps organizations to define the flourishing and subsequent period of contemplation. To then, consciously, enter a period of growth again. In the meantime Koumans has started to finance Tim Boin. In December they went together to Art Basel Miami, one of the most important fairs in the world for contemporary art. The dolphin was also there, in another version, as one of the ‘Jewels of the Sea’ that Boin showed there.

Boin also makes work for the public space. Last January and February, a whale, a squirrel, a bee and a polar bear took turns at the entrance to the Central Station in Utrecht and on ‘het Plein’ the main square of The Hague in front of the Parliament buildings, to warn against the pollution of the oceans, deforestation, loss of biodiversity and climate change.

The organiser was Awareness Art. And whose foundation is that? Right, from Koumans. ‘I think art should carry a message more often and should be brought to people much more often.’

Looking back at Awareness Art

Looking back at Awareness Art

Awareness Art 2020, The Netherlands

Our goal

January 20th was Blue Monday. We turned the most depressive day of the year into a special day, the first day of Awareness Art. For a month we shined light on the four most important climate problems of all time. Check out the video below!

The goal of Awareness Art is to bring art to as wide an audience as it can reach, so that as many people as possible can enjoy the cultural enrichment that art has to offer. At the same time, our goal is to create more awareness about relevant nature issues such as climate change, deforestation, biodiversity loss and pollution of our oceans.

The Blue Monday launch!

January 20th has been declared the most depressive day of the year. The third Monday of January. It’s cold, dark and wet. The good intentions have been given up and everyone is still broke from December.

On the most depressive day of the year, the Netherlands could use some fine art. And not just any art. But art that comes to live through light. That is what makes our sculptures extra special, they are animated in the dark hours of the day. This way the animals come to life; and their story comes out even better. In this way we turn Blue Monday into an artistic and conscious, but above all an ‘enlightened’ day.

After months of preparation, the time had finally come. Blue Monday, January 20th we launched the project in which we display the four big sculptures for a whole month in both The Hague, the political center of The Netherlands, and Utrecht Central Station, the actual center of The Netherlands, and is with 200.000 travelers per working day, the busiest train station of The Netherlands.

About the artist

The art of up-and-coming artist Tim Boin. Tim is an up-and-coming artist in the Netherlands. He was the exhibiting artist in the famous W Hotel in Miami during the most prominent modern art fair in existence, Art Basel. Tim had previously created sculptures for an exhibition of Quays Culture, in front of the BBC in Manchester. All four animals are threatened and therefore have a story to tell, they all represent one of the most pressing environmental issues we are dealing with these days. Floris Koumans felt that these sculptures and the problems they represent deserved an even bigger stage. A stage in the Netherlands. This was the beginning of Awareness Art, an initiative of the Grow and Flourish Foundation.

Spread the message!

Come and enjoy these amazing scultures between Januari 20th and Februari 20th at The Square in The Hague, on the side of the Mauritshuis and The Station Square in Utrecht, under the domed roof between Utrecht Central Station and Hoog Catharijne.
